/THE BEGINNING OF THE MIDDLE OF THE END is a multi-channel audio-video installation that draws attention to the affective experience of living amidst the exhausting movements, precarious flows, and suffocating postures of life at the beginning of the middle of the end-of-the-world (as we know it). The audio-video assemblage fuses a series of cinematic clips, meticulously scavenged from the clichéd world of popular film and television, with their misplaced sonic counterparts in order to reflect and amplify the oscillating postures of hope and despair that that now characterize our contemporary social milieu.

Project development for The Beginning of the Middle of the End was funded by the Edmonton Arts Council as part of the City of Edmonton’s Art of Living cultural plan.

Presented in partnership with Sled Island Visual Art and the Alberta College of Art + Design.

/Artist Bio

/JESSIE BEIER is a multi-media artist whose interest in both visual and sonic ecologies have led to a research-creation practice that works to think art, in its many forms, as a power for overturning cliché and dismantling common-sense habits of interpretation. Beier situates her practice within a larger body of research, which is currently focused on exploring the global movement of bodies, both conceptual and physical, in light of what has been termed the Anthropocene. Spurred by the question, “what might be done?”, Beier’s micropolitically-oriented work examines and refracts the affective productions created within today’s technological, interconnected, and media-savvy reality.
