ARTIST BIO

She began her art career doing sculptural projects that traversed the landscape in Southern California where she received her MFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1982.

EXHIBITION TEXT

Questions about relationships “between” have been evident in Cole’s site-specific work, in direct reference to place. This concern for context and location led to the use of tools and devices commonly used in the construction of “places”, such as leveling tools, measuring deviced, the plumb bob, and references to the pragmatics of her own physicality (eye level=horizon).

Barbara Cole’s exhibition deals with these “between” relationships; “this” in relation to “that”. She explores how meaning can become affected through placement.
