EXHIBITION TEXT
As Calgary undergoes another round of building and unpacking I find myself thinking of the blocks it is made up of. It is difficult to live in Calgary and not be affected by the grid. The entire landscape is based on it, whether it be the view of our downtown filled with office blocks or of the perpendicular, numbered streets. Cityscape is a translation of this grid, although the sheer silk that makes it up is much softer than the arrangement forced upon it.
Squares of silk are dyed different colours and layered in threes. This layering creates a shimmering effect, like sun on glass towers. These layered silk squares are pinned to the wall to make up buildings of various heights and widths, a modern city’s downtown core.
