EXHIBITION TEXT

My work invokes a journey, a search for a personal expression and understanding of myself as male.

In part, to be male is to present an image that reflects ascribed beliefs and behaviour patterns. In this context, I compare myself to other men and reaffirm my own maleness. By looking outward I see a reflection of that which is repeated again and again – a mirrored visage – the internal, the interior self, kept submerged and hidden by patterns of maleness.

Through the conjoining of images of myself with the of men located in contemporary culture, I hope to confront the conflicting and fragmentary images and posit a contrapuntal and personal image of maleness. In so much as my work does not offer a resolution of stragegy for change it is not didactic. Rather it is meant to embrace the ambiguity and strangeness of my experience as a male.

The quest into being is a journey towards a knowledge of self – of male/self – beyond that which is given.
