EXHIBITION TEXT

These paintings begin with a photograph of objects (building blocks), that carefully emphasize color, shape, lighting and placement. A painting representation of the photograph is then transferred onto a painted ground.

When successfully interpreted, the two; representation and ground, become integrated, there-by shifting the content of each component. A dialogue is initiated between the illusion of a created space and the existing picture plane. The manipulation of formal devices such as value and the intensity of colour and light, allow the image and ground to be read either simultaneously, or in a constant state of spatial shifting. This integration enables the painting to exist without a frame. The image is both sustained and contained by the surrounding ground.
