EXHIBITION TEXT

I chose the cat symbol because it is one of the first words children learn. People see the painting/drawing and usually respond…Oh…cats. The discussion usually ends there, although sometimes they ask why? I answer, because I live with seven cats. But for the most part my work is not a personal narrative of my cats. The symbol of the cat is left as an economical mark, yet people recognize them as cats. The structure of the work is basically abstract, but the mark, rather than being a brush stroke, is a cat. People don’t seem to require precise meaning to the work as they would do if figures were involved. Thus, the work is allowed to remain decorative.
