Photography is perceived as a deterrent from the void, a physical reminder of experience. Family archives distinguish themselves as a souvenir of a life lived, passed on to future generations. Time passes and the stories and context for these images are lost but their presence speaks to an origin of longing, our inherent need for nostalgia and memory even as the pages turn yellow. THE PREMIER LEAGUE disassembles and dissects the artist’s personal family archive, one that became apparent was a testament to masculine achievement in post-World War II. The artist’s hands displace and disrupt these images of male accomplishment from their original context, intervening to make her own narrative with a contemporary female perspective. Meaning is found in images when we can see ourselves in them, we reduce a memory to an image and in that way we can envelop it in our bodies and grasp it in our hands.

BRITTANY NICKERSON’S photographic-based practice has evolved from both a growing cynicism and sentimentality for photography. She uses archived and appropriated images to question the validity that a photograph makes memory or experience tangible, a trace for authenticity. She graduated from the Alberta College of Art & Design in 2014 and is currently a Masters of Applied Arts candidate at Emily Carr University of Art & Design.
