EXHIBITION INFORMATION

The exhibition of recent work by Calgary artist Vera Gartley consisted of nine light emitting professionally manufactured signs. Each sign presented a portion of text or slogan appropriated from advertising print material: flyers, newspapers, signage, etc. The signs were installed in such a manner so as not to set up relationships between each other but rather to exist as isolated objects. The exhibition explored the individual’s relationship with consumer seduction. The lack of referent lead the viewer to a state of suspension; desire being aroused but remaining unfulfilled.
