!!! !!! !!! – Del Hillier

September 22 – 30, 2018
At the parking lot of the Blackfoot Truckstop Diner

1840 9 Ave SE, Calgary, AB

Inspired while walking along a lone highway in Demmit, Alberta, the artist throws his fist in the air and bids for a honk from semi-truck drivers. The work !!! !!! !!! is composed of a video montage of semi-trucks appearing over the horizon and greeting the artist with each of their unique horn. The film is presented inside a semi-truck in the parking lot of a well-loved family diner, Blackfoot Truckstop Diner, Calgary, inviting the truckers, diners, old-time regulars and families to come inside the semi and experience this familiar Albertan object through the film installation.

DEL HILLIER received his BFA at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since then Hillier have participated in the residencies at The Banff Centre, The Klondike Institute of Art and Culture in Dawson City, Yukon (2015), and in Common Opulence (2015) hosted by Peter Von Tiesenhausen on his property outside Demmitt, Alberta. In 2016, I exhibited my work at Untitled Arts Association in Calgary, Alberta, and ARTsPLACE Artist Run Centre in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. In the same year, I was awarded The BFA Prize under The Portfolio Prize Award, organized and funded by the 85-5 Artists Foundation. In 2017, I stepped away from visual art to develop the musical act My Name Is Del: a self-taught Pedal Steel Guitarist and country music aficionado from Merritt, BC, Canada.
