Stride Gallery
1006 Macleod Trail S.E, Calgary, Alberta
Stride Gallery presents a public performance in conjunction with Julie D. Mills’ current exhibition ‘Grasstains’. For this public performance, Mills will combine gesture and movement common to the languages of amateur athletics and contemporary dance in an interpretive game played by one. Mills considers the ways in which sporting arenas, fields, rinks and rings situate players on a stage not unlike those which support theatrical spectacles.
The garments worn in this performance draw parallel to those in the work currently shown at Stride. When embodied, the paintings-cum-garments both extend the life of an otherwise static art object and further satirize the notion that an artist’s presence is embedded within or irreducible from creative products.
