EXHIBITION INFORMATION
Presented by Stride Gallery as part of M:ST Mountain Standard Time Performance Art Festival
For five consecutive days, Paul Couillard and Ed Johnson will perform in the Stride Gallery storefront. Each day will consist of a new “action” in the window that is in some way geared towards the site-specific space and car and foot traffic. There may also be street intervention throughout the week.
Using relationships and notions of partnerships as the basis for their playful, minimalist performances, Couillard and Johnson explore the tensions and conflict that underlie all partnerships. These works interrogate the political and social concerns which surround the gay community: HIV-status, same-sex spousal benefits, and popular media’s portrayal of gay culture. The previous manifestations of the Duorama Series have utilized such props and materials as honey, balloons, spit and flowers. Performances have taken place in gallery venues as well as off-site spaces, while also exploring the idiosyncrasies of each particular space.
Paul Couillard will also be participating in a panel discussion at the Nickle Arts museum entitled Personal Spaces and Performance Places: voyeurism and spectacle in contemporary performance, on Wednesday, April 18th at 7:30 pm.
