This workshop will be taking place on Zoom. This program is in partnership with Tsuut’inna First Nation, but we will be holding a select few spots for in-city Indigenous youth.
Join us for a painting workshop “Reclamation of Self Representation Through Visual Art” with Evelyn Mikayla Martin (itsooaakii).
“My body of work primarily consists of acrylic on canvas self-portraits and highlight the complexities of engaging in Ancient ceremonial practices and having transfer rights as a Piikani’aakii (Blackfeet woman) in 2021. Through my portrait paintings I work to reclaim a sense of autonomy and agency over my own representation and narrative as a young Blackfeet woman who grew up living out our ceremonial way of life. There is a unique responsibility and power specific to Blackfoot women that I work to showcase in my paintings.” https://itsooaakii.com/
In this workshop, Mikayla will lead you through the process of making paintings that reflect themselves and their identity. The artist will walk you and help you with technical side of painting as well. We will have a chance to see Mikaylas past and current projects and the ideas she works through her painting practice.
All supplies & snacks provided in advance.
