EXHIBITION INFORMATION

MERCATOR’S PROJECTION OF THE MIND is an installation loosely based on the dual structure of the human brain, with its separate centres for cognition, analysis, language, intuition, etc. This is a site specific installation for Stride Gallery’s location in the Alberta Hotel building. Mercator’s Projection of the Mind is part of Nunoda’s current project called Amnesia Cases. This project is a grouping of works based on a card catalogue of anecdotal text fragments. Together they form a system of cross-referencing that may be interpreted like a set of medical files or a mystery novel. The work is designed to actively engage its viewers in exploring questions of culturally and linguistically constructed identity through perception, memory and interpretation.

 

ARTIST BIO

STEVEN NUNODA is a Calgary artist and educator whose art has been exhibited locally and nationally. He has also worked on several curatorial projects and his writing was most reently published in the journal Books in Canada.
