EXHIBITION INFORMATION
SURFACING is an installation of sculptural textile works integrating costume, installation, objects and writing representing the complexities of self-portraiture. Parke serves as the central character of this work through which she explores various personae and addresses her position as a middle-class, white female, faced with issues of how self-image is constructed through complex interrelationships with the media, food and love. Text is central to both the performances and the object works. Each text combines humour and poignancy within various layers of narrative. The script alone, however, does not reveal the strong presence of Parke the performer, and her articulation of the text/poetry which lend tremendous power to the work. The performances are visually and conceptually engaging and they combine intelligent research, humour and life experience in moving and insightful ways.
