Sheila utilizes a variety of materials that are traditionally associated with femininity – including thread, lave, ribbon, and fabric. In her recent body of work, Sheila appropriates the portraits of Russian women criminals from the year 1895. By recontextualizing these images with the materials indicative of her own practice, Sheila creates work that involves the issues of ceremony and remembrance as they apply to female subjectivity.
SHEILA MCMATH currently resides in Waterloo, ON, where she maintains her practice.
